This is a 8 sided motif suitable particularly for bedspreads; if you crochet it with a thick thread, it is really too large for being a coaster... I did not test the pattern with a finer thread, sorry :)

Material : Pearl cotton # 5, hook 1.7 mm (Boye steel #7) ; you can substitute with Cebelia #10 or equivalent cordonnet thread (but the gauge can slightly vary)

Stitches : ch, sl st, sc, dc, tr, popcorn (5 dc in same lp, unthread the hook, insert the hook in the first dc, insert it again in the last dc, sl st), picot (4 ch, sc in first ch)

Difficulty: easy

Start with 12 ch; join with sl st.

1. 24 sc in lp; join with sl st in first st.

2. (dc on sc; 2 ch; sk next sc) 12 times; join with sl st in first st.

3. * popcorn in next lp, 3 ch *; Repeat from * to * 11 times more; join with sl st in first st.

4. * (5 tr) in next lp *; Repeat from * to * 11 times more; join with sl st in first st.

5. * 5 tr closed together, 5 ch *; Repeat from * to * 11 times more; join with sl st in first st.

6. * 10 sc in next lp, 11 sc in next lp, 11 sc in next lp *; Repeat from * to * 3 times more; join with sl st in first st.

7 .* sc on sc *; Repeat from * to * around; join with sl st in first st (128 sc).

8. * (sc on sc) 11 times, 2 ch, sk 2 st, (2 dc, 2 ch, 2 dc) in next sc, 2 ch, sk 2 st *; Repeat from * to * around; join with sl st in first st.

9. sl st , * (sc on sc) 9 times, 3 ch, (dc on next dc) twice, (1 dc, 2 ch, 1 dc) in next 2 ch lp, (dc on next dc) twice, 3 ch *; Repeat from * to * around; join with sl st in first st.

10. sl st , * (sc on sc) 7 times, 4 ch, (dc on next dc) 3 times, (1 dc, 2 ch, 1 dc) in next 2 ch lp, (dc on next dc) 3 times, 4 ch *; Repeat from * to * around; join with sl st in first st.

11. sl st , * (sc on sc) 5 times, 4 ch, (dc on next dc) 4 times, (1 dc, 2 ch, 1 dc) in next 2 ch lp, (dc on next dc) 4 times, 4 ch *; Repeat from * to * around; join with sl st in first st.

12. sl st ,* (sc on sc) 3 times, 4 ch, (dc on next dc) 5 times, (1 dc, 2 ch, 1 dc) in next 2 ch lp, (dc on next dc) 5 times, 4 ch *; Repeat from * to * around; join with sl st in first st.

13. sl st ,* sc on sc, 5 ch, (sc on next dc) 6 times, (1 sc, 1 ch, 1 sc) in next 2 ch lp, (sc on next dc) 6 times, 5 ch *; Repeat from * to * around; join with sl st in first st.

14. * tr on next sc, 3 ch, (sc on next sc) 7 times, picot in 1-ch lp, (sc on next sc) 7 times, 3 ch * ; Repeat from * to * 7 times more; join with sl st in first st, cut thread.

N.B.

• Always substitute (also if not explicitly said) first st in a row as follows:
  • first sc with 1 ch, sc;
  • first hdc with 2 ch;
  • first dc with 3 ch;
  • first tr with 4 ch...and so on;
• When you read "sl st to <location>", where the location is not immediately contiguous to last st, this means of course "an appropriate number of sl sts for reaching <location>".
• Also if I do not specify it, if you lasted prev row on a st (say st1), while you must start next row in another st (say st2), make an appropriate number of sl sts to reach st2.
